Meet the good bunch—Laura
Laura, Sharesies’ Marketing Specialist, gives us the lowdown on working with a strong sense of purpose, being new to investing herself, and more!
Tell us a bit about yourself
Hey there! I’m Laura, the Marketing Specialist at Sharesies here in Australia. I’ve grown up along the east coast of Australia and currently call Sydney home. I’m a creative and technical person—crafting ceramics and learning to code are my hobbies outside of work. Having a Vietnamese background also means I love food. My favourite things to do are cook and eat with friends and family.
A fun fact about me is that my first (and only) TV appearance was on RPA—I dislocated my shoulder during a 50m breaststroke final at my swimming carnival. I’m still waiting for my DVD copy of the episode from Channel 9. 🎬
What were you doing before Sharesies?
I’ve always been a big picture kinda gal, so for the past seven years I’ve worked at creative, PR, and media agencies. This taught me how to deliver measurable and creative marketing ideas. It was also a lot of fun to work in a youthful industry that was filled with a bunch of smart and driven people.
Right before I started at Sharesies, I wanted to pivot to tech after I read about how marketing needed more women with technical skills. That’s when I decided to take time to learn something brand new—I signed up to SheCodes full time and entered my first hackathon. I think it’s really important to have diversity in any industry, so my next move to fintech was a perfect fit.
What made you want to be a part of Sharesies’ journey?
Sharesies came into my life at the perfect time! I had just started investing in 2021 with my best friend who mentioned Sharesies. My first impression was that I loved the brand’s mission, aesthetic, and competitive fee structure. Finance always felt like a gated community, but Sharesies felt more approachable for new investors like me.
What does a typical Sharesies day look like for you?
My role involves a little bit of everything. I ideate, implement, and plan the marketing campaigns in partnership with my legend of a Marketing Manager, Adrien. I’m always looking for new ideas that I can bring to my work.
Each day I spend a lot of time looking at analytics dashboards—analysing what’s working, reading the latest news, and collaborating with a bunch of stakeholders like publishers, agencies, and talent.
What excites you about working at Sharesies?
So many things! I get to help make investing more accessible for everyday people like me. It’s a really great feeling when you enjoy telling people what you do at work everyday. Hearing from our investors about how they feel more confident and empowered since joining the Sharesies platform makes you feel like you're making a difference (excuse the cheesiness).
And the team! The best bunch of people I have ever worked with—so smart and supportive. It’s really the cherry on top. 🍒
Are you personally investing towards anything specific?
At the moment I’m investing for the long term. I just want to be prepared for later down the track when I have kids and retire.
What’s your aspiration for the future?
I hope people feel more comfortable talking about money in the future. We work so hard everyday for most of our lives that we should feel in control of our hard-earned cash. While I’m at Sharesies, I want to help other beginner investors (like me!) and make the Sharesies platform a place anyone can go to feel comfortable and financially empowered.
