Investing basics with Sharesies

Our Investing 101 guide highlights some of the key things to think about when you start investing—from understanding risk and returns, to choosing what to invest in.

When you’re ready to dig a little deeper, check out our ‘Investing basics’ section. We cover things like how much money to invest, mistakes beginner investors make (and how to avoid them), basic investing strategies, and heaps more.

Resources from the ASX, ATO, and Moneysmart

Both Moneysmart and the Australian Securities Exchange (ASX) have lots of great resources about investing.

Head to the ASX website for their online investing courses and glossaries, or to Moneysmart for their investing guides (including an interactive Investor toolkit and six steps to develop an investing plan). You can also check out their compound interest calculator, which is an interactive tool that can help you understand compound versus simple returns

For more info about tax and investing, go to the Australian Taxation Office’s (ATO) website.

Learn from other investors

As a new investor, it can be helpful to learn from others in the same boat as you. Read our Investor Journey interviews with other Sharesies investors.

‘Unlikely Investors’ by Pedestrian Group and Sharesies is an 8-part podcast series that follows Rob and Lach from Funny Business as they kick start their investing journeys. They dive into the investing world, and talk with five other ‘unlikely investors’ from different walks of life—including rapper B Wise and influencer Flex Mami.
